Now in its sixth year, the Props and Pistons charity event took place on August Bank Holiday Monday – and at long last, after a number of consecutive years of the event experiencing disruptive weather conditions, the day was warm and sunny without a rain cloud in sight!

The kind weather attracted all manner of cars to the charity event with around 270 rare & exotic examples from vehicle manufacturers such as Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Land Rover, Lotus, Maserati, Mercedes, MG and Porsche.

In addition to the car displays filling much of the centre's site, a capacity crowd were also treated to incredible flying displays. A first time visitor to the airfield, from North Weald, was the Hangar 11 Collection's stunning P-40M Kittyhawk – with its aggressive paint scheme it must rate as the most head turning aircraft to visit the airfield this year. The aircraft represents P-40N-1 Warhawk 44-2104590, Lulu Belle, flown by 2nd Lieutenant Philip R. Adair, a pilot with the United States Army Air Force's 89th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group of the 10th Air Force in the China Burma India Theatre. Reportedly the 89th painted their aircraft with distinctive white skulls on each side their cowlings to play on Japanese superstitions about death and related symbology.

Always staunch supporters of events at East Kirkby, Hardwick Warbirds attended again in force with P-51 Mustang Janie and examples of their T-6 Texan and Stearman. As you would expect from a pilot of the calibre of Maurice Hammond, the P-51 was expertly displayed and made for an interesting comparison against its earlier USAAF stablemate, the P-40, flown by Peter Teichman in an equally remarkable display. Completing the warbird line-up at Props and Pistons were displays by Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and three taxy runs by resident Lancaster NX611 Just Jane.
